Intro to German

Learn pronunciation, vocabulary, verbs, grammar fundamentals and common questions and phrases that are helpful to know when traveling in a German-speaking country. In addition, prepare to read newspaper articles, short stories, poetry, signs and road maps!

The textbook comes with digital resources, including flashcards and extensive audio recordings and supplemented by in-class Google Slides presentations for a more interactive learning experience. No class 11/8.

Required: Practice Makes Perfect: Basic German by Jolene Wochenske, ISBN 9781260120912 (approx. $16 onAmazon).

Note: It is best to purchase a new book with code so you can use the extra resources we will use in class.

Gregory Downs holds a BA in French and minored in German at USM. With a strong passion for foreign language acquisition and linguistics, he loves sharing this knowledge.

Public Speaking with Pride!

Heartsaver® CPR & First Aid for Adults & Children

Acquire the critical skills needed to respond to and manage first aid, choking or sudden cardiac arrest until emergency medical services arrive. In addition, learn to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock and other first aid emergencies, adult/child/infant CPR, and automated external defibrillator use.

First Aid and CPR cards are good for two years and meet the requirements for child care providers. Tuition includes $18 fee for First Aid/CPR card.

Karl Finley, volunteer firefighter for 20+ years with Scarborough Fire Department, is an EMT/Paramedic and has worked at the Saco Fire Department for 15 years. He has been the Public Education Coordinator for six years and teaching CPR for eight.

USCG Approved Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel License - Online & In Person

Qualify for a Coast Guard license to operate vessels carrying up to six passengers for hire (OUPV). The fee includes access to the Blended OUPV Course using Captain School Key West’s Learning Management System, charts, navigation tools and the USCG-approved and accepted test. Students will participate in 30 online class hours, including 16 hours of online mentoring and coaching via Zoom.

In addition, the instructor will mentor student progress and students have assignments to complete. Once online requirements are complete, there will be 16 hours of required in-person classroom sessions (Saturdays, in Topsham), concluding with the four Coast Guard approved and required examinations.

Total course hours: 62. Registration closes at noon on 9/30. Masks optional.

Required: Attending one of the FREE online Info Sessions.

John Coffin has held his USCG License since 1985 and has operated charter vessels in the Florida Keys and ME. He is a Master ME Guide and a certified Boating Instructor for US Powerboating and the National Safe Boating Council.

Certified Residential Medication Aide Certificate Program

CRMAs are in high demand!

This course provides standardized training for professionals working in state-certified residential care homes. State of Maine regulations, standard residential facility policies, and basic anatomy and physiology are covered. Discuss medications, safe administration procedures, practice taking vital signs, transcribing physician orders, and documenting procedures on the Medication Administration Record per Maine’s regulations governing residential facilities. In addition, students must complete a Clinical Medication Administration of three medication passes for three different residents with 100% accuracy. Full certification and medication pass awarded on successful completion with 40 hours of attendance, no exceptions. Participants must be 18 or older. No high school credential or background check required. Payment plans available for qualified applicants. Tuition includes fee for handbook. Course fee is nonrefundable. Masks optional. No class 10/15. Class meets F 10/14, F 10/21, S 10/22, F 10/28, S 10/29).

Required: Proof of registration, The 2020 Nurse’s Drug Handbook ISBN-13: 978-1284167900 (approx. $42, new on Amazon - or purchase a used copy from the instructor for $13), a yellow highlighter, a 1.5-inch 3-ring binder. $100 fee for medication pass payable to the instructor at your scheduled test.
