Becoming a Notary Public

A notary’s primary duty is to formally witness transactions involving paper documents and, in Maine, officiate at weddings. Prepare to be commissioned as a notary public, learn the history of the office, its powers and duties, eligibility, procedures and record-keeping. Applicants must be residents of Maine or New Hampshire residents who are regularly employed or carry on a trade/business in Maine. Leave with all the testing and paperwork completed and ready to submit to the State. License is approximately $50 and is valid for seven years.

Certified Residential Medication Aid

CRMAs are in high demand!

This course provides standardized training for professionals working in state-certified residential care homes. State of Maine regulations, standard residential facility policies and basic anatomy and physiology are covered. Discuss common medications, their many uses, common side effects and client response to side effects. Learn safe administration procedures, practice taking vital signs, transcribing physician orders and documenting procedures on the Medication Administration Record in accordance with Maine’s regulations governing residential facilities. Students are required to complete a Clinical Medication Administration of three medication passes for three different residents with 100% accuracy. Full certification and medication pass awarded on successful completion with 40 hours attendance, no exceptions.

Course fee is nonrefundable. No class 4/20.

Note: CASAS testing is highly recommended before your class starts so register early! Once you are registered, our staff will contact you to set up a testing appointment.

Note: Participants must be 18 or older. No high school credential or background check required. CASAS pre- and post-testing in Math & Reading is highly recommended.

Payment plans available for qualified applicants. $100 fee, for medication pass, is payable to the instructor at the time of your scheduled test.

Required: The PDR Pocket Guide to Prescription Pills Book ISBN# 9780553593563 (approx. $10, Amazon or Nonesuch Books), a highlighter and a 1 to 1 1/2 inch 3-ring binder.

Computer Basics

Email, surf the Internet, download and attach documents, write and edit in Microsoft Office using all the techniques to create the perfect document! Cut and paste images and text from the Internet and create your own web email account. This is a basic beginners class packed with great information. In class laptops provided.

Required: Access to a computer outside the classroom and be familiar with the keyboard and mouse.

Excel Spreadsheet Basics

Excel is a powerful tool for performing calculations, developing budgets, analyzing and managing data. Master the essentials of creating and modifying a spreadsheet including: text and number formatting, sorting and filtering data, basic formulas and charts. In class laptop provided.

Prerequisite: Completion of a Computer Basics course, Microsoft Word or equivalent familiarity creating documents, formatting text, navigating menus/toolbars in software programs.

Dave Chandler-Smith has 20+ years of IT Development on mainframe and midrange computer systems. As a lifelong learner, working in IT allows him to further his expertise by being exposed to the many software needs of various industries.

Heartsaver® CPR & First Aid for Adults & Children

This instructor-led course teaches the critical skills needed to respond to and manage first aid, choking or sudden cardiac arrest until emergency medical services arrive. Learn to treat bleeding, sprains, broken bones, shock and other first aid emergencies as well as adult/child/infant CPR and automated external defibrillator use. First Aid and CPR cards are good for two years and meets the criteria for child care providers.

Karl Finley, volunteer firefighter for 20+ years with Scarborough Fire Department, is an EMT/Paramedic and worked at the Saco Fire Department for 15 years. He has been the Public Education Coordinator for six years and teaching CPR for eight.

Get fundamental skills you can build on to move forward in this age old craft. Learn to tend a coal fire and forge iron into nails & hooks to bring home and amaze your friends! Class will be held outside, so dress accordingly. Rain date is Saturday, May 18th.

Course fee is nonrefundable so make sure you can make either date. Registration closes April 26th. Limited seats so register early!

Required: Long pants, closed-toe shoes. No polyester or synthetic material. No exceptions.

Intro to Photoshop

Build a foundation for creating and manipulating digital images; change color, size, shape, texture, create photo frames, restore damaged photos and combine visual elements using various blending modes and layers. Projects include graphic design, creating an image from scratch and how to touch up photos as in the photography and print industry. This course is designed for beginners who have little to no experience using Adobe Photoshop. Please bring a thumb drive.

Prerequisite: Being comfortable making/organizing files into folders on Mac or PC.

Wayne Lawler is currently an Art Director for a Portland marketing company. He has over 10 years of experience in Adobe Creative Suite, photo manipulation, video production, print and color theory, motion graphics, web design and illustration.
