Accuplacer Prep Math

This math course is self paced and individualized depending on the results of Unit Pre-tests _ You only work on the skills you haven't mastered yet! It starts with basic arithmetic and progresses through geometry and algebra skills. 

This enrollment class will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, January 4 through April 12th, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. No class January 16 (Martin Luther King Day), 2/20 or 2/22 (February vacation).

Melissa Mowery is the Academic Coordinator and Adult Education Teacher for the OOB/Saco Learning Center. Raising two children and having degrees in Industrial Arts & Math Education led her to a rewarding career of volunteering and teaching grades Pre-K through High School for over 20 years. Prior to her career in education, Melissa traveled and worked in a variety of jobs outside of education as well. She is passionate about her family, her students, her dogs, nature, desserts and having a positive outlook on life!

Citizenship Class

College & Job Readiness

Jan 4, 2017 at 1 pm, runs for 26 weeks

This class will focus on investigating career and college options for the post graduate. Students will take online skill, personality, and career assessments to identify individual skills and interests. Students will then create individual portfolios that include: career descriptions and required competencies, compatible college options and descriptions, and a completed college application and essay. Portfolios will also include a cover letter and a resume. Effective interview techniques will be discussed and practiced.

This open enrollment class meets on Monday and Wednesday from 1:00 to 3:00 PM and will be held January 4 - April 12. No class 1/16, 2/20 & 2/22.

This course is intended to prepare students with skills that will help them succeed in college. Special attention will be paid to the application process and financial aid. In addition to these topics, attention will be given to fundamental student skills such as note-taking and study skills. Guest speakers from various local organizations and two college visits will also be included in the schedule. Students are required to be enrolled in the full College Readiness Certificate Program unless given special permission by the Program Director. At the conclusion of the program students who wish to keep their books may purchase them at the Learning Center.

This course is intended to prepare students for college level math. The main focus of the class is algebra and will include elements such as working with polynomials, factoring, and graphing. Students are required to be enrolled in the full College Readiness Certificate Program unless given special permission by the Program Director. At the conclusion of the program students who wish to keep their books may purchase them at the Learning Center.

Mary Marra graduated cum laude from Emmanuel College with a BA in Mathematics and certification to teach math on the secondary level. She received a MA, magna cum laude, from UMASS Lowell's Community Social Psychology Department. Before teaching at Saco Learning Center, Mary taught mathematics on the high school and community college levels, and has used her problem-solving skills in various roles as community leader and nonprofit administrator. In addition to her classes at SLC and UC Saco, Mary has developed and taught an on-line math enrichment class through Notre Dame Virtual School.

College Readiness Language Arts

This course is designed to prepare students for college level writing. The course teaches writing as a way to make cognitive connections with reading. Students are required to interact with, use, and extend the ideas in the reading. All course work moves toward analytical writing and away from narrative. Students are required to be enrolled in the full College Readiness Certificate Program unless given special permission by the Program Director. At the conclusion of the program students who wish to keep their books may purchase them at the Learning Center.

Bo Hewey has taught from kindergarten through high school and Adult Education. With a Masters in Literacy Education from USM and a MA in Progressive Education from Goddard, he is a lifelong learner who enjoys teaching and learning with his students.
