Beginner French

Learn fundamental French grammar and vocabulary for a range of topics, such as home and family, travel, shopping, food and recreation. Although this course is intended for students with no prior French language experience, it would also be a valuable refresher. No classes on 10/29 and 11/5.

Text: French Picture Dictionary (Berlitz Publishing). ISBN: 978-1780044774 (approximately $10). This compact dictionary combines images with French text and phonetic pronunciations that covers many categories of interest.

Gregory Downs, BA in French with a minor in German from USM, has a strong passion for foreign language acquisition and linguistics. He loves to share the knowledge he has gained.

Sensational Stenciled Cards

If you are a card maker, you probably have stencils - but are you using them? Make three cards using stencils in three different ways. Several different sentiments will be available to customize your cards. For those interested, Faith will show you how to make your own cloud stencil to take home. Registration closes at noon on 9/30. All materials provided.

Faith Garnett began teaching card making in 2009. She sells her original greeting cards online.

A final will and testament, a durable power of attorney, an advanced health care directive, and HIPAA authorization are legal documents that every one of us needs. But as you age, the documents you need may change based on your goals, such as: avoidance of probate, asset protection or long-term care planning. Get your questions addressed while learning the significance of planning for long-term care, and what estate documents you may need to accomplish your goals. 

Eleanor Dominguez, Esq., has worked at Ainsworth, Thelin, & Raftice, PA since 2014, focusing on elder law, estate planning and estate administration. In addition, she is accredited in preparing, presenting, and prosecuting claims for veterans' benefits before the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Discuss migratory routes throughout the state and some unique strategies that hawks use to survive this extremely challenging journey. Review the best sighting locations and what equipment and resources you should bring along to enhance the experience.

Linda Woodard, an avid bird watcher, has been Director of the Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center for 18+ years. She has taught high school biology, bird watching, marsh ecology, and a wide variety of environmental topics.

Ferment This! Kombucha - Live or Online

Join us for ONE or all of Emma;s Fermentation Presentations! Zoom in and create in your own kitchen, or join her live in Portland!

You could buy a $4 bottle of kombucha, or you could make your own for pennies. It's simply sweetened black or green tea with a culture added. We'll make a primary ferment in class. A secondary one will be demonstrated so you can make it at home once your primary has developed. We'll discuss kombucha's fascinating history, troubleshooting, glassware, and SCOBYs. This hybrid class will include the microbiology and the ferment creation. Let us know if you'll attend live or via Zoom! Registration closes at noon on 9/25. Zoom link, materials list, in-person address provided by instructor. SCOBY available @ Adult Ed office Monday-Thursday, 10 AM-4 PM after 9/25; call 934-7922 to set a pickup time!

Emma Holder attended McGill University, earning a BSc in 1991 and a Masters in 1993 in microbiology and immunology. Her passion is to connect with people and provide enjoyable learning experiences to create healthy, happy lifestyles.

Gelli Plate Printmaking

Learn to use gelli printing plates! We will cover a variety of layering techniques in this entertaining printmaking session, incorporating found materials to add texture. Have fun experimenting and creating art that can be displayed on its own, or used in other crafts or collages. All materials provided.

Karalyn Thayer has a BFA from the ME College of Art with a background in teaching web and graphic design. She creates her art with the use of mixed-media illustrations and loves experimenting with at-home printmaking.
