Advanced Watercolor


with Russel Whitten

Calendar Jan 29, 2020 at 6 pm, runs for 5 weeks

Get new ideas and build upon the techniques you have already established. Learn to draw with watercolor, understand positive and negative space and color mixing and matching. Work on slightly more complex still life subjects, with step-by-step demonstrations and explanations on its execution. No class 2/19.

Prerequisite: Watercolor Basics. Required: 1 sm tube ea: Cadmium Yellow (light), Lemon Yellow, Cadmium Yellow (medium), Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue, Cadmium Red (medium), Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine (or French Ultramarine), Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna; 1 Round #10 watercolor brush,1 drawing pencil #3B, 1 eraser, 1 light board or piece of cardboard, and two sheets of Arches watercolor paper, 140 lb. cold press (or hot press, if preferred); palette for mixing and a water jar (approx. $40-$50).

Russel Whitten, a local artist/teacher, studied at The Art Students League of NY, Heartwood College of Art, and is a member of The Ogunquit Art Association/Barn Gallery. Students love his easy, supportive style.

Becoming a Notary Public

A notary’s primary duty is to formally witness transactions involving paper documents and, in Maine, officiate at weddings. Prepare to be commissioned as a notary public, learn the history of the office, its powers and duties, eligibility, procedures and record-keeping. Applicants must be residents of ME or NH residents who are regularly employed or carry on a trade/business in ME. Leave with the testing and paperwork ready to submit to the State. License is approximately $50 and is valid for seven years.

Michael Foley, an appointed ME Notary & Dedimus Justice for 10+ years, has notarized countless documents and performed many marriage ceremonies. He has been serving his community for over 15 years in various elected & appointed positions.

DIY Health Elixir

Known as the Immortal Health Elixir by the Chinese and originating in the Far East around 2000 years ago, kombucha has tremendous health benefits extending to your heart, brain and gut. Find out about this ancient drink’s benefits and how to make it. Techniques, recipes, flavoring and bottling will be covered. Each student will be provided a starter scoby and a glass vessel to make kombucha at home.

Dalton Link is a body care and vitamin specialist at Whole Foods Market in Portland, ME, as well as a burgeoning botanist with interests in mini cacti & succulents, urban farming, terrariums and bonsai trees.

Spanish for Beginners

No experience needed! This course will emphasize the basics of pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar and help you develop fundamental conversation skills. No class 2/19.

Susan Mallon, BS in Spanish from USM, also studied at the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. She was heavily involved with the Hispanic population at Sacred Heart Church in Portland, ME translating for several families and the Spanish Mass. She previously taught at Carrabassett Valley Academy, Mount Blue Middle School and Lewiston High.

The Art of Homebrewing

Get an overview of the home beer brewing process from grain to glass! Discuss the ingredients and what they contribute to the final product, review the steps of the brewing process, basic equipment needed to start, recipe development, evaluation of brews and troubleshooting. Grain, hop, and yeast samples will be brought to show and possibly taste. Last class will be held at a decided upon local brewery. No class 2/17.

Gregg Carine, a homebrewer for 20+ years, is a committed member serving on the governing board of The Portland Mashing Maineiacs Home Brew Club. He has demonstrated at Portland Brewfest, taught homebrewing at Urban Farm Fermentory and organizes the Pro-Am competition for Portland Beer Week yearly since 2012.
