Intro to Brazilian Martial Arts

Capoeira has been in existence since the 16th century, when the Portuguese brought enslaved Africans to Brazil. What began as self-defense evolved into a beautiful, flowing martial arts form combined with music. Cover basic kicks and defenses with a focus on strength, flexibility and balance. Gain an introduction to the music and instruments of Capoeira along with Portuguese language basics. Capoeira creates a vibrant community from all walks of life, so come make new friends and discover new skills. Please wear fitness clothing but no shorts please and bring water. No class October 24th.

Pamela McGrath, the first official female Capoeira teacher in Maine, has 14+ years of Brazilian Martial Arts training taken in Maine, the US and Brazil. She is the owner/director of Capoeira Alma do Mar school in Portland, offering ongoing classes & workshops.

Chi Kung (pronounced Chee Gong) is a gentle exercise that relieves stress without straining joints, muscles or ligaments. Slow graceful movements combined with meditation, Chi Kung controls energy flow while increasing stamina and awareness. This ancient Chinese practice combines intentional, controlled breathing with movements to encourage the flow of chi (vital energy) in the body elevating the immune system, releasing nervous tension and eliminating a buildup of stress, all important factors in maintaining optimal health. Wear loose clothing and comfortable shoes.

Mark Gerardi, studying and teaching martial arts for 25 years, is the founder of Samurai Fitness and member of the National Qigong Association. He is also a powerful energy healer with formal education in Shiatsu, Herbalism, EFT, KCR and Reiki.

This follow up to Chi Kung I will teach the participants other forms as well as getting into the how to of the healing aspects of this art that is a part of Traditional Chinese medicine. Some experience in Chi Kung is helpful but not required. Wear loose clothing and comfortable shoes. No class November 10th and 24th.

Lazaro Hernandez Pomeras grew up in Cuba, where he began dancing at a very young age. Lazaro attended a Cuban school of dance, finishing with a degree in Physical Education. He was invited to teach in Russia, later moving to Portland, ME, where he is known as one of the most energetic and skilled dance instructors available.

Have you ever wanted to learn to use a sword or fight with a light saber? Each class will begin with a few exercises and stretches to prepare the body for the movement we do over and around a series of obstacles. We will be utilizing a wooden training sword and learning a variety of basic sword techniques. This class has been referred to as Cross Fitness Training with Crossing Swords. Our instructors will coach and inspire you to find self-motivation through a mind/body connection and exhilarating music that will beg your legs to pedal through flats and hills. Class is geared for beginning participants although all levels are welcome as everyone works at their own pace. Registrations accepted through OOB/Saco Adult Ed only.

Note: First timers, please arrive 15 minutes before your first class for bike setup instructions. Bring a water bottle and towel, and enjoy the ride!

Paula Truman, New England Ladies Racquetball Champion 1993-2008, Maine Racquetball Hall of Fame, and certified Spinning instructor, teaches at Saco Sport & Fitness. She has been teaching for many years and works with all fitness levels, from beginners to seasoned athletes.
