The Art of Japanese Shibori Dyeing
with Kristen Bartlett
Japanese resistance-dyeing dates back to the 8th century. Bind, fold and twist your cloth to create beautifully dyed patterns. Explore techniques with a selection of objects for manipulating the fabric. A pre-reduced indigo dye will be used. Leave with three dyed (by you) creations! You will be dyeing outside so dress appropriately for the weather, rain or shine. A tea towel, a tote bag, a piece of fabric, pre-reduced indigo dye, soda ash, sodium hydrosulfite, dye vat, wash basin, and materials for manipulating fabric will be provided.
Required: Masks and distancing. Bring proof of registration. Bring one pair of heavy-duty plastic gloves and wear clothing for dyeing and bring a lunch, if you woul like.
Note: Students who take BOTH The Art of Japanese Shibori Dyeing AND DIY Sashiko Stitched Needlebook classes will get an extra piece of fabric to dye to use in their needlebook!
Kristen Bartlett was exposed to art at a very early age, inspiring her lifelong creative path. With schooling in drawing, oil painting, graphic design and photography, Kristen practices many forms of art and crafts.
