Beginning Chess - Live Online

For beginner or novice-level players who like the challenge of mental competition, or who just enjoy sitting down for a quiet game with family or friends. Studying chess develops and strengthens critical thinking skills, planning and patience. Consider it as 'pushups' for the brain! This class is for single players to learn the strategy of the game which can then be taken to the 'real' game level with a partner.
Topics include: setup & relative piece values, rules & recording games, strategic principles & tactical maneuvers, basic opening lines & pawn structure and other chess resources.
Course fee is per person. Registration closes at noon the 1st day of class.
Required: Please have your own game board ready to follow along!
Recommended text: The Complete Book of Chess Strategy by Jeremy Silman (International Master) or any book dealing with chess basics.

Lee Doucette is a 3-time Maine state class C champion. He served as a chess coach for Portland HS chess club, Treasurer for the Portland city chess club, Board of Directors and Secretary for the ME Chess Association, Local Tournament Director for the US Chess Federation and has directed over 60 USCF tournament events in ME.
