with Bo Hewey, MEd

Jan 4, 2017 at 9:30 am

The class will be a blended format with online study from January 3rd through June 14th. There will be no classes on 1/16, 2/20, 2/22, 4/17, 4/19, or 5/29.

ESOL for Busy People is designed for students who have a schedule that does not permit them to attend a regularly scheduled class. The class is for intermediate and advanced students and requires students to make a commitment to work online for at least three hours a week (a similar time commitment as a regular class) and meet with the instructor for one hour and a half a month face to face, either individually or with other classmates. In order to participate in the class students have to have access to a reliable Internet connection and a computer. The class will use Google Drive. Students will need to have a Gmail account, which can be established with the assistance of the instructor at the beginning of the course, if needed. The course will focus on reading, writing and the acquisition of vocabulary for academic purposes consistent with the Jim Cummins theory of language learning. The Cummins theory distinguishes between Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) and Cognitive Academic Learning Proficiency (CALP). The goal of the course is to improve student’s CALP and therefore has an academic orientation appropriate for learners who want help preparing to go to college, get their high school diploma, or who need to improve their reading and writing skills in order to advance in their careers. This class has ongoing open enrollment as studies are tailored to students’ needs.
