Ballroom Dancing

Ballroom dance is always in style, easy to learn, and great fun! Learn to dance with a partner and gain the confidence you are looking for by learning the basics of Waltz, Fox trot and Swing. Come alone or bring a dance partner. Course fee is per person. Wear comfortable clothing and soft-soled shoes.

Elizabeth Richards has been teaching for many years and dancing for more than 20. She loves to share the joy of dance with her students.

Basics of Singing

Calendar Oct 3, 2017 at 6 pm, runs for 1 week

Learn to sing with the right training and practice in a fun, supportive environment! Using vocal exercises and games, proper breathing, posture, and articulation techniques; you will be amazed by your newly found vocal production. Sheet music will be provided. For practice, singers will have the option of singing a song solo or in a small group.

Kathy Slack has a MA in Theater/Speech with a Minor in Voice fro Ithaca College. She came to University of Maine Orono from NYC in 1985 to complete a Masters in Communication Studies, where she continued on as an Adjunct Instructor of Communication. She continued teaching in the UMaine system for over 25 years. She recently retired so she can devote all her time and energy to teaching Voice, and participating in the Arts as a circle singing leader, performer, healer, and poet. Her recent training has been with jazz greats, Rhiannon and Bobby McFerrin, in addition to Jeanette LoVetri of NYC's, Voice Workshop. Kathy completed her full certification (Level III) in Somatic Voicework.

Playing and learning guitar is a blast, and with a seasoned teacher and musician like Travis you cannot go wrong. Focus on the names of strings, notes in the first position and build to learning chords and strumming patterns. Before you know it you will be playing music!

Required: Nylon or steel stringed acoustic guitar, picks (plectrums), an electronic tuner, and the book Hal Leonard Method Complete Set with CD (approx. $20-$25).

Travis Taylor has been playing the guitar for 14 years, and with a local band for six. He has been teaching guitar at Saco Middle School for the past 10 years.

Get your feet moving to the basics of Salsa footwork and simple, fun moves that will get you out on the dance floor. Learn to connect with any partner and build confidence dancing to different styles and tempos of music. No dance partner needed. Course fee is per person.We recommend students wear flat shoes that glide. No class October 9th.

Lazaro Hernandez Pomeras grew up in Cuba, where he began dancing at a very young age. Lazaro attended a Cuban school of dance, finishing with a degree in Physical Education. He was invited to teach in Russia, later moving to Portland, ME, where he is known as one of the most energetic and skilled dance instructors available.

Line Dancing

Learn to line dance to a variety of rhythms: Latin, country standards, and even the Electric Slide. Come get a great cardio workout and learn to dance to your favorite songs! Requests will be taken for specific dances and/or music the first night, and dances taught will be in response to these requests whenever possible. Wear comfortable clothing and soft-soled shoes. No partner is required for this fun, energetic class.

Elizabeth Richards has been teaching for many years and dancing for more than 20. Elizabeth loves to share the joy of dance with her students.

Piano 101

Learn the basics of piano easily with seasoned teacher Suzanne Farley. She will introduce you to the keyboard, get you reading music, and playing basic songs before you know it! If you are interested in checking out the piano, this is a wonderful opportunity. An electronic keyboard will be provided during class for each student. Class is limited to 8 students so register today!

Required: Piano Adventures for the Older Beginner Lesson book 1, Theory Book 1, and Technique and Artistry Book 1 for the Older Beginner (books approx. $23), by Nancy & Randall Faber, available at Midtown Music, 282-0254. Students should have access to a keyboard for practice between classes.

Suzanne Farley has taught music for more than 31 years. She teaches privately, performs locally, and is eager to share her love of music with others..

Basic tap steps will be taught in fun combinations using jazz, Broadway, musical theater, rock, rhythm and blues, and more. No previous experience needed. Please bring water, wear cool, loose clothing and flat or low-heeled tap shoes. No class October 9th.

Linda Waters, a certified instructor in Group Exercise, Healthways Silver Sneakers, Zumba & Zumba Gold, BTS Group Groove, and Night Club Cardio, has been dancing & teaching for 50+ years. She has studied all over the US.
